Things I Miss #2: 계란말이 Kye-Ran-Mar-I (Egg Rolls)

I love Egg Rolls! 너무 너무 좋아 nomu-nomu-choa (really love it) ! When I was staying in Korea, my host and my academy used to prepare Egg Rolls during lunch or sometimes during breakfast. It's such a simple dish yet can be so fulfilling.

I think indeed it's true that some times life happiness can come in the simplest form! Like egg rolls!

Do you remember who loves to eat 계란말이 kyeranmari (egg roll)?

Things I Miss #1: 한복 Hanbok

Yes the traditional costume of the Korean people is called Han Bok.한 han comes from the word "Korea" while 복 bok means "Dress". This picture was taken at Namsangol Hanok Village where you can reach by taking a subway to Chungmuro station. They rent the clothes for only 3,000 WON (USD 3) for 30 minutes and you can take pictures around the area.

They've all kinds of outfits - King, Queen, Princess, Prince, Peasants, and Scholar. In the picture my cousin brother was wearing the King outfit, my cousin sister on the left was wearing the Queen outfit and me on the right was wearing princess outfit! :)

Korean Vocab #10 [Big Bang Special Edition]: Seung Ri

Seung Ri cut his hair even shorter after being inspired by a CHEST NUT. I don't know what else to say...Why didn't he dye it chest nut colour as well?

Today's Korean Vocab:
짧은 머리 jalb-eun meo-ri: Short hair

Breaking It Down:
짧은 jalb-eun: Short
머리 meo-ri: Head/Hair

Koreans are very good at creating all kinds of hairstyles,, making artists look great in any styles. It also brings out a fresh look of that person itself. Take for example Tae Yang has had his onion hairstyle for years, kinda boring at times when you look at him.

One person I can think of when it comes to variety of hairstyles is no other than...

Why not let's learn some hairstyles as well :P
곱슬 머리 ko-seul meo-ri: Curly hair
긴 머리 kin meo-ri: Long Hair. We've learned this with G-Dragon!
스트레이트 seu-teu-re-i-teu: Straight. Meaning straight hair!

As for permed curly hair, at times we can also use a word which some might be very familiar with if you watched Boys Over Flowers:

Her Korean Things Says:
I salute to all the hairstylists in Korea! I don't think it's easy to survive in such a competitive hairstyling industry. Especially for those who are styling artists' hair. Some times you have to create the trend, some times you have to make up something new, some times you have to try crazy hairstyles like G-Dragon's and TOP's. However Seung Ri's version isn't something drastically different. :)

Korean Vocab #9 [Big Bang Special Edition]: G-Dragon's Seaweed Hair!

Recently Big Bang appeared on March 11th broadcast of SBS's 'Inkigayo' and the most hilarious part was when every member shared their inspiration for their new image crazy hairstyle. Following that, I found this picture being shared around Facebook as a summary of their out-of-the-blue inspirations!

Today's Korean Vocab:
미역 같은 긴 머리  mi-yeok kat-eun kin meo-ri: Seaweed-like long hair

Breaking It Down:
미역 mi-yeok: Seaweed
같은 kat-eun: Like/Such As
긴 kin: Long
머리 meo-ri: Head/Hair

1.0 같은 kat-eun: Like/Such As
같은 kat-eun is used to describe similarity.

Formula:
SUBJECT/OBJECT 1 (the description) + KAT EUN + SUBJECT/OBJECT 2 (what/who you want to describe)
For eg:
미역 같은 긴 머리 mi-yeok kat-eun kin meo-ri: long hair like seaweed
천국 같은 곳 cheon-guk (heaven) kat-eun got (place): A place like heaven

And the one we are very familiar with:
너 같은 사람 neo (you) kat-eun sa-ram (person): A person like you

Lightbulb moments? It's no other than Super Junior's "No Other" chorus!

Other Tips:
If you want to say "I think it's ___/It's like ___", use 같아요 kat-a-yo

For eg:
해초 같아요 hae-cho kat-a-yo: It's like seaweed
천국 같아요 cheon-guk kat-a-yo: It's like heaven
사람 같아요 sa-ram kat-a-yo: It's like a person
오빠 같아요 op-pa kat-a-yo: It's like Oppa../I think it's Oppa
학교 같아요 hak-gyo kat-a-yo: It's like a school
가방 같아요 ka-bang kat-a-yo: It's like a bag

Just like the hit song now: 꿈만 같아요 kkum (dream) man kat-a-yo: Like a dream!

And may you enjoy various versions of it:

And cheers to the original singer:

Her Korean Things Says
Honestly I don't really like G-Dragon's long hair! :( But I always admire his hardworking spirit when it comes to composing and arranging songs. He really not only has the talent - but also the determination to produce good music! I don't think he's just a singer/rapper, but also an amazing musician!

Korean Vocab #8 [Big Bang Special Edition]: Dae Sung Has Small Eyes!

Everyone is still in the Big Bang ALIVE mood. From it's release, to Running Man, to Big Show! The Big Bang Alive hype is still going on so I was thinking of making a Special Edition flashcards for Big Bang! Although Top had one flashcard for himself earlier on but it's OK he'll be in this Special Edition too! Had a hard time to think who to start off with but Running Man helped me to decide!

Today's Korean Vocab:
작은 눈 jag-eun nun: Small Eyes

Dae Sung the 미소 천사 (mi-so cheon-sa: smiling angel) is always welknown for his small eyes! Especially when he smiles or laughs! He was even proud of his small eyes when he was in Running Man:
na  nun (eye) i  jag-a (small) do i-reon-geo  chal bon-da-go!!
Eventhough my eyes are small I can still see this very well!
Breaking It Down:
작은 jag-eun: Small. It is often used with an object behind this word because it is used to describe that it is small.
nun: Eyes

So with this formula: JAG-EUN + OBJECT, you can use with anything!
작은 눈 jag-eun nun: small eyes
작은 코 jag-eun ko: small nose
작은 입 jag-eun ib: small lips
작은 얼굴 jag-eun eol-gul: small face
작은 손 jag-eun son: small hands
작은 머리 jag-eun meo-ri: small head
작은 집 jag-eun jib: small house
작은 소리 jag-geun so-ri: small voice
작은 가방 jag-eun ka-bang: small bag

Other Tips:
The opposite of SMALL, is BIG (sorry if I sound lame). So how do we describe BIG? We use the word 큰 keun. Pronounced as in Kentucky Fried Chicken's "Ken".

Similarly the formula would be: KEUN + OBJECT

큰 눈 keun nun: big eyes. TOP would have this!
큰 코 keun ko: big nose
큰 얼굴 keun eol-gul: big face
큰 손 keun son: big hands
큰 집 keun jib: big house
큰 소리 keun so-ri: big voice which means loud. Some times you listened in Drama "큰 소리 하지마!" (keun so-ri ha-ji-ma) means "do not be loud!"

Her Korean Things Says
I can't stop laughing at Running Man's Big Bang episode especially when it comes to Dae Sung! He discovered so many compared to TOP! Don't worry Dae Sung, we still love your voice so much although you have small eyes. Small eyes are sometimes sexay!

To end the post, let's celebrate with Dae Sung's solo from Alive Album. His voice never fails to make us feel GOOD! Shout together with Dae Sung: "Yeah-ee-yeahhhh!!!!"

Guess which Big Bang member will be up next?

Jeju: In Search of KhunToria at CheonJiYeon Falls!

Remember this?

Which hallyu fan can say that they do not love the KhunToria couple after watching We Got Married reality series?

When I was at Korea, I took an 8 hours ferry ride from Busan all the way to Jeju, and made sure I visit Cheon Ji Yeon falls! Just to get a feel of how 2PM's Nichkhun and F(X)'s Victoria was feeling when they were at CheonJiYeon :)

CheonJiYeon is best to visit at 5pm when the weather is chilly. The scenery was just like how it was when KhunToria was there!
God's pond

Cheonjiyeon, meaning "God’s pond," derives its name from the legend that the seven fairies serving the King of Heaven came down to the pond on stairs of cloud and bathed in its clean waters. The waterfall is 22m high, 12m wide and it dives 20m into the pool below.

When the weather is good, it felt better to take a walk along the path towards the falls. The streams made me feel so peaceful, especially with those cute ducks and huge kois swimming around each other! If you are a nature lover and have a special spot for waterscapes, please jot this place down into your notebook! Or feel free to bookmark this page on your smartphone! :)

Along the way you'll usually see lovely Korean couples like how you'd see in Korean dramas; or perhaps cute young families with little ones running around. The hot young mommie will then yell "야 뛰지마! ya, ddwi-ji-ma! don't run!"

If you love playing "Find the Treasure" type of games, try finding for the Smiling Stone Face along the streams. It's made up of half a stone and it's reflection, which seems like a smiling face :)  I caught a picture of it below, does it look like it's smiling? Or laughing perhaps!

The reason why I encourage travellers to visit CheonJiYeon at 5pm is because you can stay til around late evening when the lights around the falls lit up. If you bring your tripod with you, you'll be able to take amazing pictures during photographer's glory hour! Such a pity that I do not own a DSLR...

If you stay till late night around 7PM, you'll be able to see some cultural performances at the garden near the falls, for free! Mostly dances and songs. :)

Anyway beware, you might be beaten by 모기 (mo-gi; mosquito) during the summer when night falls. So remember to bring repellent! Or else you'll end up like me, the poor little lady sitting at the corner feeding 모기 while waiting for the waterfall lights to light up....

Cutesy pic for all Kpop lovers out there to end this post!
We couldn't laugh as happily as this when we were standing on the cliff!

TIPS FOR TRAVELERS
Who Should Go?
If you are a nature lover, or...purely wish to fantasize seeing KhunToria on the top of CheonJiYeon!

In Jeju, it's best if you have an international license so you can just scooter around. Or, take a cab. Public transportation like buses are hard to wait.
